Notorious Nairobi laptop thief nabbed as guards go hi-tech

An infamous computer thief reported to have stolen dozens of laptops from city-based sellers in Kenya’s capital Nairobi has been nabbed after security firm Securex resorted to high-tech measures.

The security firm said it undertook profiling, installation of cameras and a standby response car, which made seizing the thief trouble-free.

The thief who has been involved in a string of thefts in Nairobi is said to have targeted electronic shops selling computer hardware and posing for a customer before disappearing with laptops, according to Securex.

“The thief in question had made it his trademark to casually stroll into a big business building and make an enquiry at the reception. Should the receptionist move to the next room for even a minute, the thief used that as his opportunity to pounce on mostly laptops and valuables at the counter,’” said Securex’s PR and marketing officer Emilia Kaczmarek.

Emilia said the thief was nabbed after targeting a shop in Nairobi’s business capital Westlands where guards who were on standby recognized him from photos circulated by the company.

Although the individual would appear to be a petty thief from various quarters, the company remarks that “simple efforts by businesses to install monitoring devices like CCTV cameras could go a long way to tackling crime in the city”.

“It is no coincidence that the government is willing to invest in the setting up of cameras all across Nairobi streets in a move that might see crime reduce exponentially and also help in the coordination of traffic,” Kaczmarek said.

According to Kaczmarek, technological innovations have been known to act as a deterrent to criminals and are of significant help when it comes to investigation and that is why companies like Securex have made it their top priority to invest in top products that can help their clients sleep easy.
