MTN launches Wi-Fi hotspot service in Uganda

Integrated telecommunications services provider MTN has launched several hotspots in Uganda allowing the country’s Internet users, both the MTN and non-MTN subscribers, to enjoy unlimited Wi-Fi services.

Internet users with Wi-Fi compatible devices such as laptops, smartphones and tablets will be able to access the service after registration. MTN subscribers will be required to have an Internet Bundle on their devices to access the service, while non-MTN subscribers can purchase it via the registration portal.

“MTN hotspots will provide both MTN and non-MTN customers with a secure internet access in a number of locations across the country. Customers have a choice from a number of tailor-made bundles to suit their internet usage needs,” said Ernst Fonternel, MTN’s chief marketing officer.

“Last year, we further improved and widened our 3G+ network coverage to deliver the newly improved speed to our close to 1 million data customers supported with the widest network coverage, a wide range of devices and affordable tariffs.”

The launch of the Wi-Fi service marks the culmination of the many investments that MTN Uganda has been making in its data infrastructure. This includes the rolling out of an additional 600Km of fibre-cable, bringing it its coverage to 2,800km.

MTN Uganda was the first company to launch Mobile money service in Uganda, and just recently, it  rolled out an additional 81 Base Transmission Sites in the country, bringing its total stations to 1,100 sites by end of 2012.

As a preemptive measure against experiencing marine cuts as experiences in April 2012, the company has also included direct cable links via Tanzania and Rwanda, while at the same time enhancing its connection via the Mombasa’s EASSY and TEAMS cables.
