South African network operator Vodacom has announced the awarding of bursaries worth R9.2 million (US$1.6 million) for undergraduate tertiary technology studies in South Africa.
“South Africa’s future depends on ensuring greater access to education, and in particular, ensuring that a lack of funding does not stop top students from furthering their education,” Maya Makanjee, Chief Officer at Vodacom said.
The Vodacom Bursary Scheme has made 23 bursaries for studies in information technology, computer science, electrical engineering and computer engineering .
Nandipha Makohliso, a BSc computer science student, said: “I was wise enough to apply for the Vodacom Bursary Scheme that has helped me with paying for my education. Now I don’t have to worry about fees. All I have to do is study hard and pass.”
Makohliso, studying at Fort Hare, Eastern Cape, said that she could not afford tertiary education after matriculation.
The company is “proud to be able to offer this bursary scheme and help bright students reach their full potential”.
Vodacom’s Bursary Scheme, which has awarded more than 1,200 study bursaries and supports 111 bursaries annually, is on the lookout to support ICT skill development.
The company is open to collaboration with beneficiaries on the base of performance and opportunities.
