Vine, new video sharing service by Twitter

Twitter has launched a micro-video sharing application, Vine, exclusive on the iPhone and iPod Touch.

The new service allows users to capture video footage that is six seconds in length or less and then share them on Twitter, expanding on the “micro-blogging” theme to “micro-video”.

Describing Vine, Twitter said: “We’re introducing Vine: a mobile service that lets you capture and share short looping videos. Like Tweets, the brevity of videos on Vine (6 seconds or less) inspires creativity. Now that you can easily capture motion and sound, we look forward to seeing what you create.”

The launch follows Twitter’s purchase of startup Vine in October 2012. Vine co-founder Dom Hofmann said: “Posts on Vine are about abbreviation — the shortened form of something larger.

“They’re little windows into the people, settings, ideas and objects that make up your life. They’re quirky, and we think that’s part of what makes them so special.”

Currently Twitter’s Vine will only be made available on the iPhone and iPod touch. Vine is available for download from the Apple App Store for free and will be made available on other platforms like Android at a later date.
