Ericsson to announce Apps for African City Life winners

As part of its 2013 Ericsson Application Awards, the manufacturer launched a competition for startups, application developers and visionaries in sub-saharan Africa and winners will be announced next month.

Although the competition “Apps for African City Life” deadline for the sub-saharan Africa region elapsed on Friday, January 25, application submissions can still be made for the global competition, which closes on February 28.

Once the African applicants who submitted their ideas for mobile applications before January 25 have been evaluated, the winners will be announced on February 6.

Entries were accepted in two categories. The first category was for students and the other was for small and medium sized enterprises.

Apps for African City life was the theme set for teams who were required to develop an application for the Android platform in accordance with the theme. The theme is aimed at the promotion of mobile applications and innovative ideas that address issues in sub-saharan African urban centres.

Ericsson described the broader theme, “Apps for City Life” as a means “to promote innovations towards the Networked Society by connecting people, things and places to empower individuals and society”.
