Yu reverses tariff for off-net calls

Kenyan mobile network operator Yu Mobile has lowered its off-net tariff to KSh3 per minute, barely a month after increasing the tariff by 16.6 percent.

In December last year, Yu Mobile increased the calling rate to KSh3.60 per minute to match those of rival networks, but the reversal means the company now offers the cheapest off-net tariff in Kenya.

Yu Mobile’s country manager Madhur Taneja said in a statement that the decision to resume the initial tariff was in response to the feedback they have received from customers.

“The nature of our industry requires us to move quickly and efficiently, in order to stay relevant to our consumers,” Taneja said.

Airtel is the next most affordable operator in terms of off-net tariffs, currently at Sh3.60 per minute, after it too increased its charges back in December.

Safaricom and Telkom Orange remain the most expensive, charging KSh4 per minute to calls terminating with rival networks.

“Our strategy for growth remains to price our services more competitively than other players in the market. It has worked before and we believe it will win us more market share,” Taneja told the Nation newspaper in an interview.
