Ericsson has announced that Senegalese team Shinsekai scooped first place in their Apps for African City Life competition for its Arclean app.
Arclean supports hygiene development and environmental sanitation in cities.
The broader Apps for City life competition theme is aimed at the promotion of innovations towards the “Networked Society” through connecting people and empowering individuals and society. This competition forms part of the 2013 Ericsson Application Awards.
Second place was awarded to Kenyan team Easy Parking, which was chosen for their application that serves to assist motorists in locating and paying for available parking areas and in so doing reducing fuel consumption.
Another Kenyan application, Tokelezea, won third place, allowing users to locate and share events information in their areas.
“Applications are an integral part of our vision for the Networked Society. Arclean [Cyber Development] developed an application that addresses global sustainability and will improve the quality of life on the continent. We applaud them and share the team’s commitment to connecting people across Africa and beyond to a better life,” said Shiletsi Makhofane, Ericsson’s Sub-Saharan Africa Marketing and Strategy Head.
Ericsson confirmed that all participants of the African regional competition will be automatically entered into the global competition. Participants stand a chance to win €25,000 (US$33,843).
