Airtel Kenya has announced it will give free airtime and data to all its prepaid customers as part of its efforts to contribute to the country’s fiftieth anniversary of independence.

Airtel customers will receive free KSh50 airtime tomorrow (Thursday) morning for Airtel to Airtel calls, and 50MB worth of data, which is valid between 6am and 8am EAT.

To access the offer, there is no subscription required and customers will only be required to have their Airtel lines active at the time.

“This is our Good Morning greeting to the nation in celebration of this great milestone of its 50th birthday,” said Shivan Bhargava, managing director (MD) at Airtel Kenya.

“This being a very important occasion for all Kenyans, it will be the very first offer that Kenyans will enjoy on the day, enabling them to connect with their family and friends as they share the joy of the historic celebration.”

He said the offer is part of Airtel’s objective to increase mobile penetration and usage through empowering Kenyans to meet their daily communication needs.

The offer is part of its Good Morning Kenya service that allows its prepaid customers to access free 80MB from 6am to 8am data by subscribing through the SMS code 544 with the word Good Morning, after which it is renewed every day at 6am.

HumanIPO reported earlier this week Samsung, through its advertising partner Alliance Media, had entered into a partnership with the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) to enable live streaming of the Kenya@50 celebrations.

Meanwhile, rival operator Safaricom has launched a promotion allowing customers to win free airtime by tweeting their Kenya@50 messages under the hashtag #KenyaAt50.
