More than 40 million lines inactive in Nigeria – NCC

Latest figures released by regulator the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) have revealed more than 40 million telephone lines are currently inactive in the country.

The numbers of inactive lines hit 40.4 million in November, having increased by more than four million between January and February 2012 alone, to 35.2 million from 31.2 million.

Active telephone lines on the other hand rose by one million between October and November last year, to 110.3 million from 109.4 million.

Nigeria’s major GSM operating companies – MTN, Globacom, Airtel and Etisalat – had 106.8 million subscribers at the end of November 2012, rising from 105.9 million at the end of October.

Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) companies on the other hand continue to record decline in their subscriber base. In total, CDMA companies such as Visafone, Starcomms, Multi-Links and Zoom Mobile lost about 100,000 subscribers in November, closing at 3 million subscribers from 3.1 million in October.
