SA matric results website crashes

The South African Department of Basic Education’s (DBE’s) website is currently inaccessible as students visit the site to discover their matriculation (matric) examination results.

The individual results of 576,490 full-time and 130,646 part-time students were released in newspapers, via SMS and the department’s website today, but the website is currently down.

HumanIPO reported yesterday the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) had launched a new service allowing students awaiting their results to register to receive them via SMS.

Students can register by sending their ID number and exam number to 35658 at a cost of ZAR3 (US$0.28) per SMS.

In spite of the problems in accessing the results, South African President Jacob Zuma has congratulated students, saying they were part of “the best matric class since 1994”, with the national pass rate increasing to 78.2 per cent from 73.9 per cent last year.
