AccessKenya to connect more counties to networks

The AccessKenya Group will connect five new counties to its fibre and wireless networks in the first quarter (Q1) of 2014, with the goal of connecting 15 counties during the course of the year.

The counties set for connection in Q1 are Kisii, Narok and Bungoma counties, with Nyahururu town in Transzoia and Kitale town in Laikipia also due for connection.

“We are committed to delivering localised ICT solutions to every county. AccessKenya appreciates that each county has unique ICT needs so we plan to work with county governments and ICT managers to tailor make and deliver scalable IT solutions,” said Jonathan Somen, managing director for AccessKenya Group.

The Group – which was acquired by South African firm Dimension Data late last year – announced its strategic plans to expand into Kenya’s counties in July of last year, and added seven counties – Kakamega, Kericho, Machakos, Murang’a, Kiambu,  Embu and Meru – to its networks in the course of 2013.

AccessKenya was awarded the chance to provide coverage for Machakos county, which is set to host the much heralded Konza Techno City.

The company is in the process of digging further fibre cable extensions in Athi River and the North Coast of Mombasa to support the expansion of its network across the country.
