Kenyan telecom Safaricom has entered into an agreement with Nokia allowing it to retail the Lumia 820 and 920 phones in its outlets countrywide.
The deal will see the Lumia 920 handset retail at a special introductory offer of KSh54,999 (approx US$632), with Safaricom offering KSh500 (approx US$6) airtime and 1.5GB data bundle as incentives.
The first 500 customers will further receive a free Nokia wireless charging plate as an incentive.
The Lumia 820, which was launched early this month, will retail at KSh44,999 (approx US$517) with buyers also receiving a 1.5GB bundle and KSh500 airtime.
According to Nokia’s general manager for East Africa Bruce Howe, the deal offers the full package sought by consumers.
“The smartphone market in Kenya is growing rapidly, with consumers demanding richer features and services. Strong partnerships are called for to bring the latest in smartphone technology, compelling data offers and relevant services together in a compelling package,” he said.
Safaricom said the deal will help the growing tech-savvy customer base, which has been asking for more advanced technology.
“As the customer becomes more sophisticated, we are increasingly finding ourselves facing the challenge of meeting a growing demand for better and more advanced smart devices.
“It is through such partnerships that we are able to satisfy our customers’ needs while at the same time entrenching our market leadership position,” said Peter Arina, Safaricom’s general manager-consumer business unit.
The Windows 8-powered Nokia Lumia 920 comes with various features, including wireless charging, local navigation, floating lens technology among other features.
