DStv launches reward programme as pay TV competition stiffens in Kenya

Pay TV company MultiChoice Africa has launched a customer loyalty and reward programme in Kenya that will see subscribers who pay on time receive discounts and free 12-month access to its digital satellite TV service DStv.

In the new reward programme, customers will get a 10 percent discount for timely payments, while all subscribers will be randomly selected for a chance to win KSh600,000 (US$6,900) on a weekly basis.

The company recently entered into a deal with Samsung that will see customers get a free DStv or GoTV decoder for every purchase of a Samsung TV retailing at a minimum KSh24,000 (US$275).

MultiChoice Africa CEO Nico Meyer said: “We’re always searching for new ways to add extra value to our subscribers’ lives. Whether through innovative programming, embracing new technology or expanding our operations network, we aim to be the best.

“This year we’re consolidating all our subscriber loyalty competitions and initiatives into one portfolio called DStv Rewards.”

Competition has led MultiChoice to rethink its market segment, prompting it to introduce a low-cost service for subscribers to access digital signal via GoTV. Its offerings range from a premium price of KSh6,800 (US$80) for its satellite service to KSh599 (US$7) for its lowest subscription bouquet.

The Kenyan pay TV scene is becoming more competitive as new entrants such as StarTimes and Zuku TV are offering cheaper bouquets.
