A statement on Nigerian singer Goldie’s Facebook page and Twitter announcing her sudden death at the end of last week prompted a surge of tributes on the social media sites.
Fans of the 31-year-old Susan Oluwabimpe Harvey – popularly known as Goldie – were shocked by a sudden statement revealing her death last night on Facebook and Twitter.
“It is with heavy heart that I have to inform you all that Goldie passed this night shortly after arriving Lagos from LA. May her soul rest in the eternal peace of the Lord – Admin,” announced a statement on her Facebook page, which was also tweeted.
Having attended the Grammy Awards in the US, the pop singer returned to Nigeria on Thursday, complaining of headache following landing in Lagos, where she was rushed to hospital and pronounced dead on arrival.
News of the singer’s death has prompted a wave of tributes via social media, with the Facebook post carrying in excess of 2,000 comments some 17 hours after the revelation of her passing, while Twitter was ablaze with discussion.
In addition to the tributes, Goldie fans on Twitter expressed annoyance about the lack of clarity as to the cause of her death, which is largely thought to have been caused by a pulmonary embolism caused by deep vein thrombosis, although many reports are implicating illegal drugs in the death.
Much online publicity has also surrounded her partner, Kenyan rap star Prezzo, who was travelling to Nigeria yesterday to meet Goldie, having announced only days ago that the pair intended to marry.
