CNN anchor Christiane Amanpour has tweeted birthday wishes to President Robert Mugabe, adding a link to a specially compiled video about the Zimbabwean President’s birthday celebrations.
“Happy Birthday, President Mugabe:http://on.cnn.com/VQ4kTK #Zimbabwe”, tweeted Amanpour, congratulating Zimbabwe’s President on his 89th birthday. The tweet has since been deleted.
The video contained in the link goes on to consider how Mugabe will be celebrating his birthday, revealing he was given a gift of 89 cows and enjoyed a large cake.
Amanpour goes on to note a lavish birthday party will be held next month, which will feature a football match and an all-night concert among the festivities. The estimated cost of the party is thought to be in the region of US$600,000.
The video began with a comparison between Pope Benedict XVI and Mugabe, the former having renounced power due to advancing age while Mugabe grips to power. He is currently readying to stand in presidential elections, supposed to take place this year.
The birthday message prompted negative reactions on Twitter, with Breitbart News suggesting further recipients of birthday tweets from Amanpour.
