The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has denied its iTax system for collection of taxes has been jammed for the last month.
HumanIPO reported last month the KRA had been forced to extend the deadline for the system, which will require taxpayers to remit their taxes online, following a clogging in the system occasioned by a large number of people trying to access it.
The system, which was developed by India’s Tata Company, seeks to replace the Integrated Tax Management System that has been in operation since 2007. It was initiated in October and worked for both medium and large taxpayers.
KRA commissioner General John Njiraini has denied claims the system has never worked, saying the timing of the introduction of the system was simply ill-timed as taxpayers rushed to the platform to upload their data all at once.
“The allegation that iTax has never worked is false and fallacious. On the contrary, many taxpayers are already using the system with 93 per cent of large taxpayers and 63 per cent of medium taxpayers already enjoying iTax services,” he said in a statement.
