Documentary on social media use in Kenya to be released

SocialPRO, a social media group, has said it is planning to film a documentary to highlight the use of social media in Kenya.

 

The documentary will showcase outstanding social media cases, influencers, and key people and organisations, as well as memorable events that have made significant contributions in Kenya, SocialPRO said.

“At this point we need to reflect on where we’ve been, where we are, the challenges, threats and lessons as we focus on the future of social media in Kenya and in Africa,” Muthuri Kinyamu, a social media strategist with SocialPRO, told HumanIPO.

The documentary, to be named “The Social Kenyans”, will interview social media icons, developers, bloggers, artists, industry analysts and users.

“Through this project we also hope to promote responsible ways of engaging on social media as well as educate Kenyans on social media etiquette and ethical ways of communicating online for societal good,” Kinyamu said.

The announcement seems to stress the idea that the power of social media is at its full potential in Kenya, as on several occasions Kenyan topics have trended worldwide.

Kenya has approximately1.88 million Facebook users and thousands of Twitter users. Brands and individuals have made the most out of social media as a tool for effective and timely communications.

According to SocialPRO, the documentary will enlist key events, people and statistics and showcase the beginning of social media in Kenya, as well as highlight how Kenyans are using the platforms.

Influential people and brands will also be showcased during the documentary. It will in addition feature concepts that have used the power of social media and other opportunities still unexplored.

Another part of the documentary will aim to show threats and best practices on social media.

“We shall also highlight on the systems, policies and guidelines in place in various institutions, including government, private sector and not for private organizations. We’ll also feature common challenges brands face and get expert opinions,” SocialPRO said.

The documentary will also focus on the future of social media in Kenya and in Africa as a whole. Opinions from experts and major players in the industry are expected to shape this part of the production.

“We do hope to release the documentary in April on TV after the dust has settled on the general elections. The full documentary will be aired on a TV station and shall also be released online. However before it airs on TV we shall leak the teasers online. We shall also have DVD version of it,” Kinyamu added.
