Orange Uganda launches Luganda OS

Orange Uganda has launched a phone operating system (OS) in Luganda, the country’s major language, to ease communication for those uncomfortable with English.

The new phone system will be available to users with all the usual amenities, the company said.

“The Nalongo [device] is a dual-SIM phone with features like a camera, radio, torch screen and MP3 player,” a statement read. The device will cost UGX69,000 (approx US$27).

Orange “hopes that the new phone will ease communication for people who do not understand English but can easily read Luganda”, with the device becoming “the first local language phone on the Ugandan market, amid stiff competition among telecommunication firms.”

The Luganda language is spoken by 16 million Ugandans, mainly in the south of the country and the capital Kampala.
