Facebook will allow users to make free voice calls to their Facebook friends through its updated application “Facebook for iPhones or iPads”.
The updated app for the popular Apple mobile devices now indicates when Facebook friends are online and gives users the option of making a voice call to them “by tapping an icon on the screen”.
Just like many other voice enabled instant messaging services, the voice calls are routed over the Internet as data irrespective of whether a user is connected by a Wi-Fi hotspot or a mobile services provider’s network.
The Facebook for iOS 5.5 app update also includes other features such as more prominent buttons to ‘like’, comment on and share posts in the News Feed. Another addition and update is that the Share button is now available in all languages.
This feature will only be available in North America, with both the caller and receiver required to be in the USA or Canada.
There has been no update from Facebook as to when it will roll it out in Africa.
