Designs for the relocation of the popular Lagos Computer Village from Ikeja to Katangowa Market are underway, with the project expected to cost around 500 million naira (US$3 million).
The project is part of the state government’s Digital Village project and, according to Vanguard Newspapers, the new village will be bigger, spanning 26 hectares.
The proposed site, off the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway, is currently being used by traders selling clothes.
Olutoyin Ayinde, Lagos State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, revealed that the government has put measures in place towards the rehabilitation at Katangowa in order to speed up the relocation process.
Ayinde said: “To start with, the initiative to rebuild the Computer Village is in line with the policy of the state government to re-plan Ikeja. The place you have as
Computer Village today was a residential zone in Ikeja and not built for commercial activities.
“But due to long years of military rule, we seem to have lost a sense of order and planning. Now the state government is working tirelessly to rebuild the place and put it in a better shape.”
According to him, the state government discovered the Ikeja Computer Village had become less conducive and had to swing into action.
Towards the Digital Village project, he said the his ministry is already designing the project expected to cost around 500 million naira.
