Nokia will launch Nokia Life in Kenya next month, delivering tailored, locally relevant content in local languages for users who may not necessarily have a data plan.
The service is to be provided by leading operators Safaricom and Airtel.
It is already available in Nigeria, China and India, where it is in use by 95 million people in 18 languages.
“We are delighted to introduce Nokia Life to Kenya with its rich set of relevant services that will help users connect easily to information that matters to them, and in the longer-term, help entire communities thrive,” said Jawahar Kanjilal, global head of Nokia Life.
Among services provided by Nokia Life are daily tips and advice in topics such as education, health, infotainment and agriculture, through partnerships with organisations involved in academia as well as governments and non-governmental organisations.
In Kenya Nokia Life is expected to work with organisations including the British Council, the Foundation for Social Change and Plan International.
The three organisations will provide content in the areas of education, life skills and parenting advice.
Nokia says the country is a particularly good launching pad for the region given the large number of young people using mobile phones as an essential everyday tool, saying the service is an easy-to-use service delivered as richly formatted messages to engage people, facilitate learning and help bridge information gaps that impact their quality of life.
Nokia life will be available in English and Kiswahili with Kenyans enjoying it free for 30 days, with the option to subscribe monthly for as little as KSh2 Kenyan Shillings per day (US$0.69 monthly).
