Cape Town Science Centre re-launched in Observatory

The Cape Town Science Centre has officially re-launched officially on Tuesday after moving from its previous location in the Canal Walk shopping centre to the suburb Observatory.

“As a science centre its location is far more accessible to all our communities,” Julie Cleveron, director of the science centre told News24.

Located on the Main Road, across the Grootte Schuur Hospital, close to local transport stops, including bus, taxi and train routes, the new location is much more reachable for Capetonians.

“Our visitors are delighted with the new venue, which bodes well for our future as we continue to grow into this new building and establish new partners and sponsors,” Cleverdon said.

Approximately 70,000 visitors, including 20,000 school students, have benefitted from the experience offered in the Observatory-based centre since December 28, 2011.

“It’s been a hectic and very pleasing first year and we finally stopped to take a breath and celebrate last night,” Cleverdon said about the late launch.

Originally known as the MTN Science Centre, the facility educates the public in making sense of technology since 2000.

Programmes are aimed at both formal and informal education sectors with activities also offered through a mobile outreach vehicle.
