The Kenya Copyright Board has today destroyed over one ton of an assortment of pirated material and gadgets used in infringing piracy that it seized following a series of operations in Nairobi, Kenya.
Among the products destroyed are illegal music CDs, movie duplicators, VHS machines, DSTV decoders and satellite dishes used in the illegal transmission of pay television’s broadcast signals.
The board says the destroyed materials were drawn from exhibits of concluded cases in court and obtained from 120 raids with 108 prosecuted cases that resulted in fines and custodial sentences, with the court ordering the exhibits to be destroyed.
This is the fourth time that the copyright board has destroyed impounded material with the organisation having destroyed a similar amount less than two months ago.
“Amongst the materials earmarked for destruction at the WEEE Centre premises situated at Silverstone Godown #4 North Airport Road, off Mombasa Road, Nairobi are illegal music CD and movie DVD duplicators, VHS machines, DSTV decoders/receivers and satellite dishes used in the illegal distribution of DSTV broadcast signals,” said Rosemary Waithaka, senior public communication officer.
The material was destroyed at the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Centre a department of Computer For Schools Kenya (CFSK) which destroys e-waste materials in an environmentally friendly approved manner.
Among other partners in the anti-piracy campaigns by the board include the Kenya Police, Choice DStv Kenya, Autodesk and the Recording Industry Association of Kenya (RIAK).
