Google pays tribute to Mama Africa with a Google doodle

Google is celebrating what would have been the birthday of Miriam Makeba, known as Mama Africa, with a Doodle on its South African homepage.

Miriam Makeba is a celebrated musician from South Africa who passed away in 2008. Today would have been her 81st birthday and Google have paid tribute to her.

Mama Africa, as she was popularly known across the world, was also a Grammy Award winner and a civil rights activist in South Africa. She made African music popular across the world.

In a statement to honour Miriam Makeba, Google South Africa, said: “A great woman who experienced tragedy and triumph in equal measure, Miriam Makeba was and remains, a story like the wind…from a far off place, that gusted intensely in all corners of the world, and indelibly touched all who ever heard her.

“She lived for today, thought about tomorrow, remembered what history had to say and never was afraid past wisdoms to borrow.”

HumanIPO reported earlier today the Google Kenya homepage was hosting a special Kenya election doodle.
