A new jury will re-evaluate how much in damages Samsung should pay Apple concerning patent infringements on 14 handsets and tablets.
At the end of the original August trial, Samsung were ordered to pay US$1 billion to Samsung, but on Friday Judge Lucy Koh knocked US$450 million off the original award.
The new jury will now decide how much extra Samsung should pay for infringements on 14 of the products that featured in the original trial, reported the Guardian.
Koh has decided the re-evaluation should take place since Apple demanded they should be paid more, while Samsung believe the amount was too much.
A Samsung statement said: “Today’s verdict should not be viewed as a win for Apple, but as a loss for the American consumer. It will lead to fewer choices, less innovation, and potentially higher prices.
“It is unfortunate that patent law can be manipulated to give one company a monopoly over rectangles with rounded corners, or technology that is being improved every day by Samsung and other companies.”
The Samsung and Apple patent battle has been ongoing since April 2011 when Apple filed a suit in the US claiming the South Korean manufacturer used a number of its patented technologies in its smartphones and tablets.
