The next big area of growth is going to be video services on mobile devices, according to Pierre van der Hoven, founder and chief executive officer (CEO) at low bandwidth mobile video provider Tuluntulu.
Van der Hoven was speaking at the 2014 SatCom and World Rural Telecoms Congress Africa event, which kicked off in Johannesburg, South Africa yesterday.
“I think Africa is at the beginning of an explosion,” he said. “If I only have one device and I have no electricity and no television, I’m convinced that could be the primary device.”
He said the growth of all video services in South Africa is increasing at a drastic rate, adding that as African regulators relax more competition will be fostered in the video sphere.
“The growth of online video globally doesn’t seem to stop. The growth between 2006 and 2013 is a fifty-times multiple,” he said.
HumanIPO reported last year video is the fastest growing mobile traffic data source.
According to a study by Ericsson, globally video is expected to increase by around 55 per cent annually up until the end of 2019.
“VoD [video-on-demand] services are starting, you see a lot of them popping up,” said van der Hoven.
