Eugene Juwah, executive vice president of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), has predicted by 2015 the nation’s ICT sector will be contributing 15 per cent of Nigeria’s GDP.
“[ICT contribution to the Nigeria's GDP] should jump from the current 5.6 per cent to between 13 and 15 per cent by 2015,” Juwah said.
He said his forecast was based on the structured investment and regulatory intervention of the Nigerian government.
Juwah was part of a panel of ICT industry and administration experts who spoke at the Broader Way 2013 Forum – Make it Possible, sponsored by Huawei.
He noted Nigeria is on the right track towards ensuring speedy deployment of broadband and added the nation’s current programmes and strategies are capable of causing rapid development of the ICT sector.
Hamadoun Toure, International Telecommunications Union’s (ITU) secretary general, expressed his excitement at the growth pace of ICT in Africa.
According to him, this could help the continent in achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
“The digital economy allows anyone, anywhere [to] play an active role in global issues and value chain,” Toure said.
