IEBC site back online

The website of Kenya’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is back online, having been inaccessible throughout the election process.

HumanIPO reported on Tuesday, the second day of the election process, the IEBC’s website was down and displaying only an error message.

As such, no contact could be made with the commission via official routes, nor could interested parties check the website for clarification on issues developing throughout the election process, such as technical hitches which caused significant delays in vote counting.

The website remained faulty throughout the whole week, with only the “vote” branch of the website accessible, although many expressed frustration at the slow pace of updating of this section.

It is now back online, although by now Kenya has already elected a new president, Uhuru Kenyatta, thus removing much of the pressure for public information on the part of the electoral commission.

Kenyatta won with 50.03 per cent of total votes cast, prompting much controversy as to the margin by which he surpassed the 50 per cent required to win outright without necessitating a second round of voting.

Rival candidate Raila Odinga has sworn to take legal action to challenge Kenyatta’s election, claiming evidence of rigging and unreliable counting.
