Nigerians gain Facebook access via USSD

Airtel Nigeria is to allow its clients to connect to Facebook through Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) code, as part of the network operator’s efforts to make virtual socialising available to those without internet access.

USSD grants access to social media without internet connections such as general packet radio services (GPRS).

Olu Akanmu, chief marketing officer at Airtel Nigeria, said: “Airtel is committed to making the immense benefits of Facebook available to the widest number of Nigerians.

“At Airtel, the quest for total satisfaction of our customers drives us to continuously respond with customized offerings and services that will delight and engage telecom consumers.

“We will always occupy the front row in innovation that will enable Nigerians to build great bonds of friendships and fulfil their life aspirations.”

Developed by U2opia Mobile, the service is based on the original idea of Fonetwish, built for offline Facebook interaction.

The rollout of this affordable service in Nigeria follows its primary launch in India in May, 2011. Airtel recently also made high definition (HD) voice services available to its subscribers.
