Nigerian online merchants welcome arrival of PayPal

Nigerian online merchants have welcomed the launch of PayPal in the West African country, saying it will lead to a growth in internet transactions, though warning it needs to integrate with local platforms.

HumanIPO reported earlier this week PayPal had become available in ten new markets, including Nigeria, Cameroon, Ivory Coast and Zimbabwe.

Adeoye Ojo, co-founder of SureGifts, told HumanIPO local merchants would benefit from the launch as it would make online payment easier for customers, though he said SureGifts would not accept PayPal payments until it allowed local merchants to integrate.

“The entry is still a limited one for now, we look forward to when all the services offered by PayPal are made available to Nigerian merchants and users as this will make payment easier for our customers abroad,” he said.

Afam Anyika, Jumia Nigeria’s head of offline marketing took a similar view, saying as the latest entrant into the Nigerian market PayPal should be the one approaching platforms such as Jumia for integration.

Chibuike Alagboso, co-founder of HealthNewsNG.com, believes PayPal will present new opportunities and will solve many challenges.

“The opportunities it will present and challenges it will help solve are so many. I have found it hard to make so many payments on some merchant websites because of it. It will save citizens the agony of losing their money to scammers who always claim to have ways of making have the account. I am also scared that fraudsters might use it to dupe people before adequate security measures will be put in place.”
