South African price comparison platform PriceCheck has partnered with MTN Nigeria to launch a PriceCheck app for the Nigerian market.
PriceCheck provides access to the retail price, product information, location and reviews of products available online and in physical stores around the country to assist consumers in their research prior to purchase.
HumanIPO reported in March PriceCheck and MTN South Africa unveiled a co-branded mobile app for the South African retail market, aimed at bringing the flexibility of mobile to the shopping experience.
The companies announced the new collaboration this week, which sees the app rolled out to Nigerian consumers for the first time.
“PriceCheck’s experience over the past seven years has taught us that search is where everything starts. It is the first step in the decision making process for the end user, the point where influence is the strongest,” said Andre de Wet, chief executive officer (CEO) of PriceCheck.
“The partnership with MTN both in South Africa and in Nigeria gives us access to the largest mobile phone market in Africa. Together we own product search. Shopping is no longer somewhere you go, it’s something you do – that’s the power of mobile.”
MTN Group chief commercial officer (CCO) Pieter Verkade said: “Mobile commerce is on the rise in Africa. The partnership with PriceCheck will not only give our customers a better and richer digital experience, but also empower them to make more informed decisions, while saving time and money on their purchases.”
According to the companies, PriceCheck is particularly suitable in an African context given that it lists online and offline shops and their products.
“We call it everywhere commerce – e-commerce, offline commerce, mobile commerce – all in one place. We’re at the forefront of a digital explosion and it won’t happen on the web, it will happen in homes and malls and cars, as close and immediate as your phone is right now. Your mobile is going to bring local and relevant search to wherever you want it to be,” de Wet said.
The companies said a number of additional features are currently under construction, such as a direction function to provide users with step-by-step map direction directly to each store; mobile payment integration and offline collection options.
The PriceCheck MTN Nigeria app will be available for download in most app stores as of August, and will be preloaded on a range of MTN Nigeria devices.
