USAASA disappointed by SIU handling of investigation

The Universal Service and Access Agency of South Africa (USAASA) has said it is disappointed with the way the Special Investigation Unit (SUI) has handled its investigation of the universal access agency.

HumanIPO reported yesterday the SIU had taken a case to court to get USAASA chief executive Zami Nkosi removed from his position.

The move follows an investigation ordered by President Jacob Zuma into “allegations in respect of affairs” within the agency.

USAASA has responded by saying: “As a state agency that respects the rule of law, we would not like to comment on merits and de-merits of the allegations, safe to say we are disappointed at the manner the matter was handled by SIU.”

It said the SIU’s decisions cast doubt on the integrity of the agency.

“It seems it has entangled in a spider web designed by people who have material and political interests,” USAASA said.

However, it said it welcomes the move as it provides the opportunity to be investigated by a competent judicial body.

“For the record, since the agency was formed almost 18 years ago, it has never been in good shape as it is today. The agency has been working very hard to improve the lives of the vulnerable majority without fear of favour,” it said.

It assured its stakeholders and citizens that it will continue its work in connecting people in the country.
