Sundar Pichai is the new Android architect, replacing Andy Rubin as the search giant embarks on merging the internet and mobile corporate subdivisions.
Pichai, now the senior vice president, is to address Google’s new internet-driven mobile approach.
His previous role as executive overseer at Chrome contributed to the development of Google Drive and Gmail, among other web browser applications.
The strategy for Google’s intended merge of Android and Chrome is yet unknown.
“You had this Chrome OS and this Android Group that were building in many overlapping products,” Michael Gartenberg, an analyst at Gartner told Reuters.
Rubin, who worked on the building of Android since its inception in 2005, is yet to fulfil an unannounced new role in the company.
Larry Page, chief executive and co-founder at Google, confirmed Rubin’s resignation in his Google blog post: “Andy’s decided it’s time to hand over the reins and start a new chapter at Google.”
Succeeding in establishing Android as an open-source platform currently used by approximately 75 per cent of global mobile phones, the expectations are great as rumours of Rubin’s possible involvement in the development of a self-driving car or Google Glass do the rounds.
Page praised Rubin’s work as “exceed(ing) even the crazy ambitious goals we dreamed of for Android”.
Google’s encouragement and rewarding of staff members is noted as Eric Schmidt, among other executives, will be receiving US$6 million as a mark of appreciation for the leading international firm’s successful financial year, HumanIPO reported.
