Motsoeneng removal stands – SABC board

The majority of the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) board has insisted the decision to remove Hlaudi Motsoeneng as acting chief operations officer (COO) stands, despite Minister of Communications Dina Pule’s statement to the contrary earlier.

HumanIPO reported earlier today Pule told SAfm Motsoeneng would remain acting COO until a meeting with an agenda following corporate principles takes place.

But Lumko Mtimde, speaking on behalf of the board’s majority, said the removal of Motsoeneng stood as they had followed proper procedures.

“The board meeting [on February 25] was properly constituted and the decision to release Mr Motsoeneng from acting chief operating officer stands,” said Mtimde.

The SABC announced earlier this month it was replacing Motsoeneng with Mike Siluma, veteran journalist and head of radio news and current affairs. It was then forced to deny claims he had been reinstated.

SABC chairman and deputy chairman Ben Ngubane and Thami ka Plaatjie have subsequently resigned their posts, though it remains to be seen whether their resignations will be accepted.
