Jubilee and CORD take rivalry to social media

The Jubilee Coalition and CORD have taken their ongoing row over the results of the Kenyan election to social media, as the latter challenges the declaration of Uhuru Kenyatta as president-elect.

While Jubilee is keen on showing its supporters and the world Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto have everything under control, CORD have been posting figures representing what they say are cooked figures by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Over the past week Kenyatta has posted photos of various envoys around the world congratulating him as well as meetings with Jubilee elected candidates and outgoing President Mwai Kibaki.

CORD, under a page named ‘CORD Effect’, have posted details on the filing of a case challenging the declaration of Kenyatta’s victory, as well as tallies on the general election, which they say were fraudulent.

An example of a post on CORD’s page:

CORD-PETITION

*****************************

We wish to assure our members that the CORD election petition will be filed before the close of week. Members are therefore requested to stay calm as our legal team puts final touches on the case. The delay in filing has been occasioned by the large volume of evidence coming in daily from patriotic Kenyans and we thank everyone for such fantastic cooperation. We will update you through this forum on the exact time of going to court so that you may come and witness the historic quest for justice. We stand for Justice and Integrity. Thank You and have a blessed day.

The CORD Effect page has a following of just over 22,000, while Uhuru Kenyatta continues to command a large following on Facebook, with 456,106 “likes”. The official Raila Odinga Facebook page has 124,000 followers.

Both sides remain equipped with the social media machinery that will keep the competitive mood high, and from the CORD side there remains a feeling that the fight is not lost even as the Jubilee Coalition maintains a “go back to work” attitude.
