Telkom Mobile launched

Telkom Mobile has been unveiled and is targeting South Africa’s “heavy and high-end users” on a “faster, top quality network”.

The part state-owned telecommunications operator caused significant confusion earlier this month when it appeared to ditch its mobile brand 8ta, only for it to backtrack within 24 hours.

Telkom’s alternative to 8ta has now been revealed however, with 8ta now a “sub-brand” of Telkom Mobile.

Attila Vitai said: “There is a significant core group of consumers who expect to be able to do more with their devices in their own time and on their own terms.

“They know a lot about mobile products and are getting better at understanding complex deals and associated terms and conditions. With this increasing savvy they want simplicity and the ease of selection and use of their mobile products.

Vitai added the reason for sticking with 8ta was because it has a strong and loyal following in some parts of the market.

Telkom Mobile will be aimed at those consumers who use a lot of data and voice call services.
