Kenyan app developers to be rewarded by Tecno and Zalego

Mobile handset manufacturer Tecno, together with mobile application development training institute Zalego, will reward the top entries to the Afmobi developer challenge from Kenya, Nigeria and Ethiopia.

The competition has been running across the continent in which developers compete in creating Java apps for Tecno’s low end devicesand Android apps for Tecno’s smartphones in Kenya, Nigeria and Ethiopia.

The award ceremony will take place at Kenyatta University on Saturday, March 23. from 9am-2pm, where the top developer will receive KSh200,000 (US$2,300) and an Android phone.

The first and second runners up will receive KSh150,000 (US$1,730) and KSh100,000 (US$1,150) respectively, with an Android phone.

Top ten entrants in the competition will not go home empty handed, as each of them will receive a Tecno Android Smartphone.

Tecno has been targeting the Kenyan market with low priced smartphones, including the Tecno N3, that retails at KSh8,000 (US$92) for the dual SIM version, and KSh6,000 (US$69) for the single SIM version.

The company announced its plans to launch mid-level Android-4 devices estimated to retail at KSh10,000 (US$115), a 5 inch low resolution smartphone, and a high end smartphone device to retail at less than Kshs25,000 (US$290).

Tecno says that this high end smartphone is meant to compete with the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S4, only that it will come at a cheaper price, as compared to the KSh60,000 (US$690) that the Galaxy S3 retails for currently in the Kenyan market.

The competition was therefore a strategic move meant to encourage developers to create apps that will be included in the smartphones set for launch later this year.
