Hewlett-Packard (HP) has developed glasses-free 3D technology for mobile devices, saying it could transform data visualisation, medical training and entertainment.
The company have published their findings in the science journal Nature, which says the technology would look like a hologram, though it is created differently.
Lead author of the paper David Fattal told the Associated Press the effect is “much like you’d see in the movie `Star Wars’ with the hologram of Princess Leia”.
The technology uses geometric optical tricks to create 3D images, with small circular grooves on the device’s surface producing different views and colours and providing a wide viewing angle.
Nintendo has been developing such technology for a while now with its 3DS handheld console, though last week it was found guilty of patent infringement and ordered to pay US$30.2 million in damages.
