NCC postpones MNP launch until April

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced it will not be able to launch Mobile Number Portability (MNP) today (Monday), and is now aiming for April 4.

Tony Ojobo, the commission’s director of public affairs, said the commission had to postpone the MNP launch due to ongoing final testing of the equipment.

MNP will give subscribers the power to migrate seamlessly from one network to another without changing their numbers.

Ojobo said: “MNP operators are ready and set. They are just fine tuning their equipment for final testing which will affect the target date. The operators request for additional three weeks to complete testing.”

As a result of this postponement, he said the commission has fixed a new date for the launch.

“The MNP launch hopefully will now take place April 4,” he said.

In addition to getting the equipment ready for the launch, Ojobo said the commission has started engaging members of the public through the mass media.

“There is the need for the public to know the essence and the benefits of MNP and how to access it,” he said.

HumanIPO reported the NCC informed members of the public of its readiness to launch MNP after a series of postponements which had led to pessimism about the seriousness and readiness of the commission.
