Chief justice and president of the Supreme Court of Kenya Willy Mutunga’s private emails came under attack on Monday by hackers, as he heads up the one of the most crucial legal cases in the country’s history.
This is according to information from the country’s judiciary, which confirmed the incident.
“We are taking precautionary measures to prevent further attacks that may come due to the sensitivity of the case he is handling,” the judiciary said.
The attack comes as Mutunga oversees the petition on the recently concluded presidential elections, with Kenya’s prime minister Raila Odinga challenging the declaration of Uhuru Kenyatta as Kenya’s fourth president by the country’s electoral body, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
Monday this week was the official day when the cases began in the Supreme Court of Kenya, with a pre-trial conference that lasted two days. A ruling is expected on or before Saturday this week.
Police believe the attack is directly related to the nature of the cases Mutunga is handling, and have promised to apprehend the suspects within the shortest time possible.
In February, Mutunga reported his life was in danger after he received threatening messages from the outlawed Mungiki group. The matter is still under investigation.
