Nigeria’s National Information and Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has announced its readiness to introduce Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) in order to enhance the security of online transactions and to sustain the platforms.
The agency’s director general, Cleopas Angaye, was speaking in Abuja at a workshop organised by NITDA on PKI.
According to him, the need for PKI is necessitated by the alarming rate of uncontrolled communication and transaction in cyberspace.
p>He noted that accessibility, security and credibility could be greatly enhanced with the development of a sustainable and secure platform.
Angaye said PKI is: “A security architecture that has been introduced to provide an increased level of confidence in exchange of information over an increasingly insecure internet.”
He said the infrastructure is an aggregation of security technologies, procedures, processes, and policies that collectively form a framework with which fundamental security issues could be holistically addressed.
Angaye also decried the unprotected nature of most present day forms of electronic communications.
He said this ought not be so because such communications and data storage should be kept away from unauthorised individuals to prevent fraud, misdirection and illegal access.
