Nigeria’s national security adviser (NSA), Sambo Dasuki, has said despite all the efforts of the nation’s various agencies in tackling cyber-related crimes, the nation remains a haven for cyber criminals.
According to Dasuki, the nation is still ranked among the world’s leading perpetrators of cybercrimes in the world.
The NSA revealed this in Abuja while speaking at a workshop organised by the National Information and Technology Development Agency (NITDA) on Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) in Nigeria.
He said cybercrimes originating from Nigeria and those that are perpetrated by Nigerians all over the world are having a negative impact on the country’s image and economy.
He said the relative ease with which the nation’s cyberspace can be compromised has necessitated the need for serious actions to be taken by all stakeholders in the country’s security and information communication technology (ICT) sectors.
Tackling cybercrimes in Nigeria has been at the forefront of various deliberations by various organisations and arms of government.
HumanIPO reported last month the support that Nigerian lawyers and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) gave to the ongoing amendments for the Nigerian Criminal and Penal Codes Act of 2004 to extend to cybercrimes.
In November, HumanIPO also reported the passage for a second reading of the Nigerian cybercrime bill which has been extensively supported by various stakeholders.
With the NSA’s remark on the status of cybercrimes in Nigeria, cyber security experts believe the government will take concrete steps in addressing the menace that has placed the nation’s cyberspace on various international watch lists.
