MTN staff abducted in Lagos, kidnappers demand NGN70 million ransom

Nigeria’s largest telecommunications company, MTN Nigeria, has disclosed a member of its staff has been kidnapped in Lagos, with the kidnappers having already demanded a ransom of NGN70 million (US$441,000).

According to the company, the victim is 44-year-old Yemi Owadokun, who was captured on his way to work in the early hours of Thursday at Ologunfe junction, Awoyaya in Lagos.

The kidnap and ransom demand follows a similar incident with the staff of another telecom, when the victim was released after 10 days of incarceration after a NGN2 million (US$12,600) ransom was paid to secure his release.

When contacted on the latest incidence, an officer of the Nigerian Police Force, Elemoro division, confirmed the incident and assured newsmen the force is currently carrying out investigations.

He however recommended an independent body take over the investigation to reveal the kidnappers and free the MTN staff.
