A plastic screen protector has been developed for the iPhone 5 which turns the device’s screen into a 3D display without the need for 3D glasses.
The EyeFly 3D encompasses 500,000 lenses which render stereoscopic 3D content by sending slightly different images to the right and left eyes of the viewer, resulting in content being viewable in 3D.
The key to the innovation is that each lens has a 1:100 height to width ratio, allowing so many to be fitted onto the space of an iPhone 5 screen, resulting in 3D viewing without the need for an external viewing implement such as 3D glasses.
The Singapore-based creators of EyeFly also claim a world first, in that the EyeFly protector enables 3D viewing in both landscape and portrait modes, thanks to the tiny size of the lenses.
“EyeFly 3D is the first 3D smartphone screen protector to offer the flexibility to suit all of your viewing needs, be that portrait or landscape – any which way you please,” the developers claim.
The EyeFly creators also say the plastic sheet does not have any negative impact on the 2D viewing of the smartphone.
“Other 3D screen protectors on the market have a significant negative effect on the normal 2D use of your phone,” they said.
“They reduce screen brightness by up to 50% and obscure the beautiful high-resolution screen on your smartphone. EyeFly 3D has none of these issues. You will maintain the fantastic brightness your phone shipped with as well as the high resolution that you love to use.”
Meanwhile, the EyeFly sheet retains its screen protecting function, providing mechanical protection to guard the smartphone’s screen from scratches.
The 3D screen protector is currently available for pre-order for iPhone 5 and fifth generation iPod Touch, and will soon be rolled out for Samsung Galaxy S4 and iPad 4.
