The South African Banking Risk Information Centre (Sabric) has warned home computer users against a new scam, which deceives people into supplying their personal information.
Sabric said the scammers posed as callers from “reputable software computer stores”. Furthermore, Sabric said phony calls from the ‘stores’ give advice to victims saying their systems are faulty or have been compromised and require urgent remedial action.
Victims compromise their personal information by installing or accepting malware onto their computers unknowingly.
“Criminals always think of clever ways to sell bank customers believable stories in order to trick them into compromising their banking details and any unsolicited approaches should be treated with caution irrespective of plausibility,” Susan Potgieter, Sabric commercial crime general manager, told the South African Press Association (SAPA).
The malware in question allows attackers to access the victims personal information and utilise it to steal money out of their accounts.
