Samsung today launched the Galaxy Mega, the largest handset available to date, hoping to combine the portability of a smartphone with the capabilities of a tablet.
The Galaxy Mega is available in two sizes, with the larger device boasting a 6.3-inch high-definition (HD) LCD screen, making it the largest smartphone on the market, while the smaller version has a 5.8-inch screen.
The company claims that the device provides the “optimal viewing experience” given the size of its screen, while also displaying the ultra-thin hand-held characteristics of a smartphone.
“We are aware of a great potential in the bigger screen for extensive viewing multimedia, web browsing, and more,” said JK Shin, chief executive officer (CEO) and head of IT & mobile business for Samsung Electronics.
“We are excited to provide another choice to meet our consumers’ varying lifestyles, all while maintaining the high-quality features of the award-winning GALAXY series.”
The device carries a range of new features which enhance the multi-tasking capabilities of the handset, including a split-screen capability which allows concurrent use of two apps, or the use of video content while emailing, for example.
The Mega is also streamlined for functionality and content sharing. Not only will the device act as an IR television remote controller, but when connected to an entertainment system will display recommendations and schedules.
The “Group Play” feature will facilitate content sharing between up to eight devices, while the “ChatON” function allows users to share content displayed on the screen with other devices.
Running on the latest Android 4.2 Jelly Bean system, the Mega has a Dual Core Processor, extensive internal storage, as well as up to 64GB of expandable memory, with Samsung promising the advanced software on the device will achieve much longer battery life.
The first handsets will be available from May, following which there will be a global rollout.
