Twitter to launch music app this weekend – report

Twitter is rumoured to be launching a music app this weekend, most likely on Friday at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in California.

According to AllThingsD tracks available to users will be based on one’s personalised following, including Twitter accounts by artists.

The microblogging site has also launched the music site music.twitter.com. Users will be able to log in to the site using their Twitter accounts.

The music service is said to be owned by Sony and Universal Music, and will use third party agents like SoundCloud and iTunes and music videos by Vevo.

The rumours were boosted by American Idol host Ryan Seacrest who says he has already used the app in a series of tweets to his account.

Speculation has also been bolstered by Twitter’s acquisition of We Are Hunted, a music startup used for tracking popular songs at any given time for an undisclosed amount.

The startup through its website acknowledged it was shutting down to join Twitter.

“While we are shutting down wearehunted.com, we will continue to create services that will delight you, as part of the Twitter team. There’s no question that Twitter and music go well together. Artists turn to Twitter first to connect with fans, and people share and discover new songs and albums every day. We can’t wait to share what we’ve been working on at Twitter,” read a statement.
