Africa’s first Mobile Centre of Excellence has been opened at the University of Ghana, in Accra, as Airtel and IBM look to drive innovation in mobile technology.
The facility aims to give students at the university access to mobile technologies and create an environment of innovation.
IBM and Airtel are hoping to open their next Mobile Centre of Excellences in Kenya and Nigeria.
Phillip Sowah, managing director of Airtel Ghana, said: “We have been impressed by the level of talent and dynamism amongst students in Ghana and are confident that with the right support and access to technologies, they can go on to play an important role in developing the mobile technologies and businesses of the future.”
As well as the Centre of Excellence, the partnership has also launched a competition which will encourage Ghanaian students to develop mobile solutions.
Africa is the fastest growing mobile market, with more than 700 million subscribers on the continent.
