Google chairman Schmidt calls for drone tech regulation

Eric Schmidt, chairman of Google, has called for the regulation of civilian drone technology amid concerns over privacy and security concerns.

In an interview with the Guardian newspaper in the UK, Schmidt said versions of unmanned drones owned and utilised by the US military could fall into the wrong hands and being misused by individuals or terrorists.

“You’re having a dispute with your neighbour,” the Guardian quoted him as saying.

“How would you feel if your neighbour went over and bought a commercial observation drone that they can launch from their backyard. It just flies over your house all day. How would you feel about it?

“I’m not going to pass judgment on whether armies should exist, but I would prefer to not spread and democratise the ability to fight war to every single human being.”

HumanIPO reported yesterday on Schmidt’s controversial comments on Google+ regarding the entirety of the world’s population being online in the near future.
