South Africa’s TopTV has dropped two of its channels, Top Movies +24 and Top Junior, as a turbulent six months goes from bad to worse.
The pay-TV operator, which has been in Business Rescue since November last year, is currently waiting for the results of an Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) hearing, which will decide whether or not it will be allowed to add three pornographic channels to its bouquet.
TopTV’s bid to add the adult content has done little to bring public sympathy to their case, with high-profile figures such as rape survivor Hettie Britzz and religious groups speaking out against the operator.
In a statement issued today, TopTV’s parent company On Digital Media (ODM) said: “It has become necessary to review the pay-TV operator’s current channel line-up and make certain adjustments in the interim period.”
It added: “TopTV regrets the timing of this change to its channel make-up but, due to operational reasons, it has become necessary to prepare for a proposed new channel structure.”
Regarding the ongoing talks with potential investors, ODM said: “These talks are at an advanced stage and, should they reach finality, a much-needed cash injection will be made into the operation that could result in a restructure of the business and the channels that are currently on offer.”
